Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most popular and celebrated festivals of the Hindu religion. It is celebrated all over the country with full devotion and joy. This festival is celebrated as a birth anniversary of the Lord Ganesha. On this day, Lord Ganesh is worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. Lord Ganesha is known as Vighana Harta means remover of all obstacles for devotees and Vighana Karta means the creator of problems for the devil.
Ganpati, Vighnaharta or Vinayak, Lord Ganesh has many names but one face. Ganesh Chaturthi is being celebrated all over India however especially in Maharashtra as an important festival of the year.
WHEN GANESH CHATURTHI IS CELEBRATED
This festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhadrapada, starting on the Shukla Chaturthi or the fourth day of waxing moon period. It is a 10-day long festival that ends on Ananta Chaturdashi, which is traditionally celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha.
HOW GANESH CHATURTHI IS CELEBRATED
The festival is marked by the setting up of ‘pandals’ at various places and the idols of Lord Ganesha. People also set up clay idols of Lord Ganesha at their homes for the 10-day festival. Lord Ganesha is also known as ‘the Lord of beginnings’, so he is honored at the beginning of the celebrations. Devotees offer a variety of things to the God including Coconut, modak, jaggery, durva grass, flowers, red flowers garland, etc.
